There are two fundamental elements to the chemistry of a spa, which are:

- Water balance

- Disinfection

If you do not balance your water, disinfection will not work, so chlorine or bromine alone is not enough. By balancing your water, it will also stay clean longer and prevent the water from becoming aggressive, giving your spa a longer life.

There are several factors that determine water quality. Things like organisms, copper, sulphites, water temperature and rainwater completely change your spa water. It's usually the least likely small factors that change your water the most.

The most important factors for good water are:

Disinfection:

Chlorine and bromine are the most common products for disinfection. To effectively disinfect your spa, you need the right pH level in your water. Chlorine is effective between pH 5.5 - 7.8 but it is better to keep your pH level between 7.2 - 7.8 because if the pH level is lower than 7.2, the chlorine will burn faster and become more aggressive. If the pH level is higher than 7.8, the chlorine becomes inactive and will not be able to purify your water.
You need 10 times more chlorine in the water at pH 8.2 compared to pH 7.2.
