Frequently asked questions about Pool Chemistry

What is pool chemistry and why is it important for my pool?

Pool chemistry involves the use of chemicals to sanitise and balance the water in your pool, preventing the growth of bacteria, algae and other micro-organisms. Proper management of pool chemicals ensures healthy and clear water, providing a safe and enjoyable swimming experience.

What types of pool chemicals do I need to maintain my pool?

To maintain your pool, you will need the following chemicals: disinfectants (such as chlorine) to eliminate bacteria, pH adjusters to keep the pH between 7.0 and 7.4, alkalinity adjusters to stabilise the water's buffering capacity, algaecides to prevent algae growth, flocculants to remove small particles and cleaners for the pool surfaces and filters.

How often should I test and adjust the chemistry of my pool?

It is important to test the chemical balance of the water in your pool at least once a week. Regular testing will help you quickly identify and correct imbalances in pH, alkalinity and disinfectant levels, ensuring a safe and pleasant swimming environment.

Can I use regular cleaning products in my pool?

No, it is not recommended to use ordinary cleaning products in your pool. These products may contain substances that foam, adversely affect the water balance and can be harmful to bathers. Instead, use specifically formulated pool cleaners that are designed to effectively clean without disrupting water quality.

CHLORINE

Chlorine is probably the best known swimming pool chemical and the best and cheapest way to eliminate bacteria, viruses and other things we don't want in our bathing water. However, not everyone can swim in chlorine and there are alternatives to chlorine. Chlorine is available in liquid form, as a powder or in tablets.
Before adding chlorine, measure and adjust the pH value to between 7.0 and 7.4. This is very important for the chlorine to work at its best.

SHOCK CHLORINATION

Shock chlorinating a pool involves breaking down bound chlorine, (chloramine), by adding a high dose of chlorine or a chlorine-free oxidant such as active oxygen.
Shock chlorination is usually done once a week or every two weeks, depending on how much the pool is used.

BROM

Bromine is an alternative to chlorine and is more commonly used in warmer waters, such as in hot tubs. As these often have a higher pH value, bromine works better than chlorine in that environment.

GENERAL EQUIPMENT

Algaecides are often copper-based polymers. Algaecides are used as preventive protection against algae growth. They are added after shock chlorination to prevent algae from growing in the pool.

FLOCK EQUIPMENT

Flocculants help to clump together small particles in the water so that they can be captured by the filter.
